The Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone (EPA-SL) wishes to inform the general public that the newly appointed Executive Chairman of the Agency, Dr. Bondi Gevao has officially commenced his duties. It would be recalled that earlier this year, His Excellency the President, Rtd. Brigadier Dr. Julius Maada Bio appointed Dr. Gevao to succeed the outgoing Executive Chairman, Prof. Foday Moriba Jaward, who has assumed leadership of the new Ministry of the Environment. Dr. Bondi Gevao’s appointment was subsequently and unanimously approved by Parliament on the 20th March 2020.
Given his rich academic and international background in the field of environmental protection and management, Dr. Bondi Gevao brings a wealth of experience to his new role as overseer of the entity that was established to effectively manage the environment of Sierra Leone. He holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University Lancaster, United Kingdom; MSc in Environmental and Ecological Sciences, Lancaster University and BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, University of Sierra Leone. Dr. Gevao is an environmental organic chemist with expertise in a number of analytical techniques for measuring contaminants in the environment at trace levels. He has worked on many aspects of the sources and environmental fate of contaminants, studying chemical behavior in the aquatic and terrestrial environments.
His international work experience also accounts for his suitability for his new role. In 2003 Dr. Gevao joined the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) where he served as senior research scientist steering research to provide scientific evidence for assessing the effectiveness of international efforts to minimize the release of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the West Asian environment. Furthermore, Dr. Gevao spearheaded research that culminated in KISR being selected by the Conference of Parties (COP) to the Stockholm Convention to serve as one of twelve regional centers for capacity-building and the transfer of technology in 2009. Dr. Gevao has over forty publications in leading, internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals in the field of environmental sciences and is also a reviewer for several environmental chemistry journals including Environmental Science and Technology, Chemosphere, Science of the Total Environment, and is currently on the editorial board of the Elsevier Journal “Emerging Contaminants”. He co-chairs the session on “Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Developing World” at a very important annual conference on “Halogenated Persistent Pollutants” since 2015. He is the rapporteur and Quality Assurance Representative on the projects review committee for the Water Research Center at KISR.
Dr. Bondi Gevao’s passion to come home and serve his motherland, yet again, is a manifestation of his unwavering commitment to the attainment of His Excellency the President’s New Direction agenda and love of country.
