Dr. Foday M. Jaward is an accomplished academic who holds a BSc degree (Honors) in Chemistry from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone in June 1991, MSc in Environmental Science from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in March 1996, and a PhD in Environmental Chemistry from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom in June 2004. He joined the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health faculty as an Assistant Professor in May 2006. From 2013 unto his appointment in 2018, Dr. Jaward had served as an Associate Professor with tenure and Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health, College of Public Health, University of South Florida from May 2006 to July 2013. As part of his duties, he was responsible to manage and supervise various funded research projects including programs. Additionally, he undertook research, published findings in peer-reviewed journals and presented papers at professional conferences, provided the department and college with professional support and technical advice on the development and validation of analytical methods. Moreover, he ensured operation, maintenance and calibrations of various laboratory equipment as well as development of standardized metrics of environmental assessments and couple with teaching various graduate level courses in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. Serving in his home country, Dr. Jaward had lectured at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Njala University College from 1996 – 2000. While impacting knowledge at the Njala University, he taught Environmental, Analytical, Organic, Physical, Inorganic, Spectroscopy and Bioorganic Chemistry and practical at graduate and undergraduate levels. He participated in national science curriculum development activities and served as resource person for environmental issues and represented the University at conferences on environmental issues. In his quest to contribute to the cooperate world. Dr. Jaward served as a Consultant at the Sierra Rutile Company from 1996 -2000. During those periods, he provided the company with technical advice and support in Health and Safety, collected and analyzed soil, water, fish and fishery product samples for aquaculture drugs, pesticides, histamine, methyl mercury, wide range of microbiological hazards, heavy metals and other environmental chemical contaminants. Furthermore he assisted the company to design remediation strategies caused by the mining activities such as creation of ponds, destruction of biodiversity and chemical wastes/effluent disposal, design and implement total quality management, and overall quality assurance within the entire processing chain, monitored, calibrated and verified weighing and measuring equipment and other rapid testing kits and assisted the company to prepare their labs for accreditation according to management system.
