The government of Sierra Leone through the Environment Protection Agency, ushered in a shift to electric mobility as a renewable energy initiative 25/11/2024 Freetown, Sierra Leone

This was made possible with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), where we officially launched the Gender-Sensitive National E-Mobility Strategy for Sierra Leone (2024-2035) and Pilot Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations.

Madam Mimi Sobba-Stevens, the deputy minister of Environment and Climate Change, officially launched the strategy in an audience that included members of the media, international missions, school nature clubs, the private sector, security forces, and other related ministries, departments, and agencies.

She described it as a policy measure to achieve electric vehicle targets and gender inclusion in Sierra Leone’s evolving e-mobility landscape.

Dr Abu-Bakar Massaquoi, Executive Chairman of the Environment Protection Agency, stated that the strategy will be integrated into NDC 3.0 and proposed as a pathway to carbon neutrality by 2050.

The agency will also investigate the possibility of developing a framework for carbon credits that may be accrued and paid for annually by significant polluters, establishing a carbon market system, and developing the next NBSAP to investigate the interconnection of nature with climate change.

Internationally, we should strengthen GEF/GCF complementarity, allowing us to increase such climate investments.

We will employ visibility and accountability to analyse the effects of electric mobility, coordinate effectively across sectors, and implement the MEACOM’s action plan.

Other speakers commended the move to go green to protect the earth. They confirmed their commitment to ensuring Sierra Leone’s transition from oil and fossil fuel dependency to renewable energy through electric mobility.

The ceremony concluded with a float parade featuring tricycles and motorcycles that are completely solar and electric-powered.
