The Environment Protection Agency is delighted to welcome Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, Executive Director of the Liberia Environmental Protection Agency, and HE Angie Kolue Von Ballmos, Liberia Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sierra Leone, to its headquarters to facilitate a fair exchange of Sierra Leonean environmental governance and management practices
Dr. Abu-Bakar Massaquoi, our Executive Chairman, provided an overview of the EPA-SL mandate, explaining the agency’s legislative and administrative framework for meeting its objective as a scientific and regulatory agency for effective environmental management.
“A regional approach to environmental governance is crucial if we are to not only provide a unified voice for climate and ecological issues on global forums but also to coordinate policies”, he said.
More projects can be developed through collaboration, ongoing interchange, and consultations, and the geographic and ethnic similarities between the two countries to ensure sustainable resource management.
The heads of Legal Affairs, Compliance and Enforcement, Field Operations, and Extensions, and Research, Policy, and Innovation Directorates, respectively, explained the established regulatory and administrative framework for effective management, which included prosecutorial powers, field monitoring, EIA and ESHIA processes, and the implementation of eco-friendly projects, among other things.
In their respective speeches, the Executive Director of the Liberian Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, and the Liberia Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sierra Leone, HE Angie Kolue Von Ballmos, underscored the importance of collaboration and the need to study an established environmental regulatory agency to see how best we can collaborate for sustainable environmental management, as policy harmonisation enables success.
The visit ended with a photo opportunity and a donation of EPA~SL souvenir items.
