THE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AGENCY SIERRA LEONE CONCLUDES A TWO-DAY TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR IMPORTERS AND RETAILERS ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES AND OZONE-DEPLETING SUBSTANCES IN MAKENI, BOMBALI DISTRICT.

Participants were drawn from related ministries, departments, and agencies such as the Sierra Leone Police, customs officers from the National Revenue Authority, the media, and members of the refrigeration industry.

It could be recalled that the agency in 2022, convened relevant stakeholders to conduct an extensive review of the 2010 Prohibition of Ozone-Depleting Substances as contained in the Montreal Protocol and the ratified Kigali Amendment.

To enable Sierra Leone to meet its obligations under the protocol, it is prudent that we periodically evaluate and reinforce our legal provisions with the absolute goal of improving the country’s position to meet its hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) phase-out schedule and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) freeze and phase-down plan.

It also addressed emerging issues within the Montreal Protocol.
The involvement of relevant stakeholders in the refrigeration industry was critical in determining how we can develop effective regulations and action points that are consistent with our commitment to the protocol.

Guided by our Act of 2022 and the Protocol, recommendations were made on how to close existing gaps to ensure effective compliance and enforcement of the regulations.

The diverse perspectives of stakeholders, which included importers and retailers in the #ODS sector, as well as other actors in the refrigeration industry, explained industrial customs and how they can comply with processes that protect the ozone layer, and they assured that they were willing to comply with the country’s prohibition on the importation of toxic and banned chemicals.
